Biographical/Historical note
AAUP History:
The Northern Michigan University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) was established in 1951. The first election for collective bargaining at Northern Michigan University was held in 1972. At the time, the AAUP voted against collective bargaining rather than to allow the Michigan Education Association (MEA) to become the bargaining agent. In 1974, both the AAUP and the MEA began a campaign for collective bargaining. The administration claimed that a union would be counter-productive, and some faculty also feared that a union would not always represent individual interests and that the AAUP would compete with the already existing Academic Senate. Nevertheless, in 1975, the faculty voted for unionization and selected the AAUP as its collective bargaining agent. The AAUP has since represented the faculty in individual grievances over contract violations. In 1977, the AAUP led a strike before a new contract was signed, and in 1979 it brought a salary equity suit. In 1980 the AAUP negotiated a contract with the administration and also regarding retrenchment when government funding cuts forced spending reductions. Since 1980 the AAUP has represented Northern's faculty during negotiations for new contracts.
