Scope and Contents note

This collection is comprised with the recognitions and awards that have been presented to the accomplished Alumni and Faculty of Northern Michigan University and The NMU President's Award for Distinguished Citizenship. The items in this collection displays the university’s recognition of those Alumni, Faculty, and Community Members who have shown great achievement in their profession and society. The Distinguished Alumni Awards in this collection range from 1960-1986. Photographs and recognition of the Outstanding Young Alumni and Alumni Service Award dates are from 1984 and 1985. Other items included in this collection are plaques in recognition of Alumni, including NMU Copper Country Alumni Outing. The Distinguished Faculty Awards in this collection range from 1979 to 1987. The NMU President's Award for Distinguished Citizensip range from 1974 to 1987.

Historical note

Since 1964, the Northern Michigan University Alumni Association presents its accomplished alumni with a number of different awards honoring their accomplishments following their departure form NMU. These awards recognize graduates who have achieved records of outstanding accomplishments of national note within their professions and community. The awards that are included in this collection are the Distinguished Alumni Award, Outstanding Young Alumni Award and Alumni Service Award.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to those who are outstanding in his/her profession and has made significant contributions to society and/or profession. Other factors include demonstrated leadership and/or honors received that clearly sets them apart from their peers; a person who is distinguished by his/her achievements. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award honors those Alumni that are under 36 years of age who has shown endeavors in professional, civic, business, political or similar activities, that set the candidate clearly apart from his/her peers and has shown service and/or honor to NMU through their endeavors. The Alumni Service Award honors those Alumni whose volunteerism, contributions and/or recruitment efforts on behalf of NMU are above the norm, evidence by loyal and outstanding service in areas, such as the NMU Alumni Association; the NMU Development Fund; service to school, departmental, or other NMU committees; establishment of a scholarship; serving as an alumni ambassador; and/or serving as a mentor.

The Distinguished Faculty Award is presented to faculty in recognition of excellence in teaching, researching, or scholarly work.

Arrangement note

The Northern Michigan University Distinguished Alumni, Faculty, and Citizenship Awards records consists of one series and six folders arranged by year and type of award presented.

Custodial History note

The NMU Distinguished Alumni, Faculty, and Citizenship Awards records were donated to the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives by Travis Reamer. University Intern Archivist Jaime Ganzel completed the donor agreement on 11 November 2013. This collection was processed and the Finding Aid completed by Archives Student Assistant Morgan Paavola in May 2014.

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION GUIDE

This collection guide includes collections from member organizations of UPLINK (the Upper Peninsula Digital Network) as well as the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives. UPLINK collections document the history of the Upper Peninsula broadly, while the Central UP & NMU Archives focuses on such topics as Northern Michigan University history, the local iron mining industry, and the politics, economics, religion, environment, and culture of the Central Upper Peninsula region.
