Biographical / Historical

The Cleveland Cliffs Iron Mining Company was formed from the merger of the Cleveland Iron Mining Company and the Iron Cliffs Company in 1891. At its peak, the company held, in whole or in part, a variety of firms engaged in mining, lumbering, rail and water transport, realty, and chemical manufacturing. The Application for Old Age Pension records contain both applications for pension by Cleveland Cliffs workers and the recommendations made by the Pension Board. These forms provide the researcher with information related to the work record of the individuals employed, such as department, location, occupation, dates employed, pay received, age at application for pension, and the monthly pension to be paid. Also documented on the forms are the date of birth, city of birth, state or country of birth, and the home address at time of application. The Recommendation for Old Age Pension forms show the decisions made by the Pension Board regarding the employees' pension applications.

The Recommendation for Widows and Orphans Pension Allowance records contain both applications and the recomendation forms documenting the Pension Board's decisions. These forms give the name of the mine where the death of the employee occurred, the position the deceased held when he died, date and manner of death, accident report number, length of employment, and pension amount approved. Also to be found in these records are the names of the spouses and children, the ages of the children when the pension allowance application was submitted, and the names of any appointed guardians.
