Scope and Contents note

This collection consists mainly of Northern Michigan University basketball and football game programs; photographs of teams, athletic activities, and coaches; and news articles related to NMU sports from 1928 to 1992. The collection also includes a football program from 1992.

Biographical note

Gildo Canale, a native of Crystal Falls, Michigan, began his Northern Michigan University career as NMU’s first full-time trainer. He also served as director of intramurals, head golf coach, assistant athletic director and was appointed director of athletics in 1971. Canale served as director of athletics until 1985. Canale continued to serve NMU until his retirement in 1993. Canale was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and the NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. He received the NMU Alumni Service Award in 1995. Canale died on February 26, 2009 at the age of 77.

Separated Materials note

Sports artifacts with the collection have been transferred to the University Museum. Photographs of teams, athletes, and coaches have been transferred to the General Topical Collection. Please see the Archives staff for help accessing these materials.
