Scope and Contents Note

This collection documents the activities of the Citizens to Save Little Presque Isle and Wetmore Landing. Led by Dr. Donald Snitgen, Professor of Biology at Northern Michigan University, the group successfully prevented the Michigan Department of Natural Resources from allowing the construction of campgrounds and other commercial activities in the area. The collection contains correspondence, position papers, taskforce records, "In Memory of the Lorax," chronology, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes, and newsletters from 1986 to 1993.

Historical Note

The Citizens to Save Little Presque Isle and Wetmore Landing formed in 1991 as a grassroots environmental protection activist group that worked prevent the development of Little Presque Isle and Wetmore landing into an organized campground managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Both locations are in northern Marquette County. The group argued that the construction and use of public campgrounds would have an irreversible, destructive affect on the area's fragile ecosystem.
