This collection comprises the reference file of Lew Allen Chase, chair of the History Department at Northern from 1919 to 1944. Although blind, Chase possessed almost total mental recall and engaged his students to read to him from newspapers and other publications on a regular basis. The file covers a wide variety of subjects including agriculture, banking, Native Americans, the Civil War, occasional student term papers, the Upper Peninsula, and much miscellany.
